Textured tile, small mosaics, slip-resistant coatings and non-slip bases that improve traction in wet, barefoot use.
A wet, soapy floor is one of the most common places for slips at home. The good news is that a shower floor can be designed for traction. Small tile has more grout lines, which add grip. Textured and matte finishes grip better than polished ones. Some acrylic and fiberglass bases have molded slip-resistant patterns, and there are coatings that add texture to existing floors. Each approach has trade-offs for cleaning and appearance. In Nashville, where we work with families of every age, we focus on solutions that are comfortable underfoot and easy enough to keep clean.
We look at the existing floor and the way the shower is used, then recommend an approach: new small-format tile with textured finish, a replacement base with a slip-resistant surface or, in some cases, a coating applied to an existing floor. We talk about cleaning, because very rough textures can hold soap scum. For floors we rebuild, we plan slope, drain and tile together so water drains quickly and the surface stays comfortable. We also suggest bath mats or accessories only where they are safe and appropriate.
Mosaics and small hexagons have many grout lines that improve traction compared to large tile.
