Long, narrow linear drains that allow single-slope floors and large tile, with careful waterproofing and a clean look.
A linear drain is a long, narrow drain placed along a wall or at the shower entry. Because water runs toward one edge, the floor slopes in a single plane instead of four, which allows large tile on the floor and gives a very clean, modern look. Linear drains are popular in curbless showers and in showers with large-format tile. They are also less forgiving than a center drain: the slope must be right, the drain must sit at the correct height for the tile and the waterproofing around the drain body has to be carefully done. In Nashville, we install linear drains with a system approach so the elegant look is matched by solid performance.
We plan the drain location and length, then frame and set the drain at the right height for your tile thickness. The sloped floor is built toward the drain, and the waterproofing system connects to the drain flange. We select a drain with a cover that suits your style, such as a slotted grate or a tile-insert cover, and we show samples. After tile is set, we install the cover and test flow. We explain cleaning, including removing hair strainers, so the drain keeps working well.
A one-direction slope allows large floor tile and a simple, flat look.
The drain must match tile and mortar thickness exactly, which we plan before building the floor.
The drain flange is integrated into the waterproofing so there is no leak path.
Grates, tile-insert covers and decorative finishes change the look, and we show you options.
