A James Hardie cement backer board used behind tile in showers and wet areas.
HardieBacker is a cement backer board from James Hardie, a company better known for fiber cement siding. Cement board is a common substrate behind tile in showers because it does not rot or turn to mush when wet. It is not waterproof by itself, so shower walls still need a waterproofing membrane over or behind the board. In Nashville, many tile showers use cement board over studs, with seams taped and sealed and a membrane applied to create a complete wet-area system.
We are an independent contractor and install HardieBacker when you choose it. We fasten board to studs with the correct screws, treat seams with tape and mortar and apply a waterproofing system as specified. We also use other backers, such as foam board, when they suit the project. We explain the difference between water-resistant and waterproof so you understand what protects your walls.
